Railways take measures to deal with Global Warming

The information below was given by the Minister of State for Ministry of Railways, Dr. R. Velu Indian Railways Work Horse Diesel Locomotivein a written reply in Lok Sabha.

Mass Emission Measurement System for measurement of gaseous emissions and particulates has been installed on diesel engines test bed at Research Designs and Standards Organization, which is the nodal agency for evaluation and appraisal of such projects.

Work Consultancy for Reduction of Exhaust Emissions from Diesel Locomotives on Indian Railways’ has been sanctioned and the work is in progress. In addition, various technological improvements are being taken up on diesel locos, not only to improve performance capability of locos but also to reduce unburnt fuel, thereby arresting global warming.

Indian Railways (Hindi: भारतीय रेल Bhāratīya Rail), abbreviated as IR (भारे), is the state-owned railway company of India, which owns and operates most of the country's rail transport. It is overseen by the Ministry of Railways of the Government of India.

Indian Railways has one of the largest and busiest rail networks in the world, transporting over 18 million passengers and more than 2 million tonnes of freight daily. It is the world's largest commercial or utility employer, with more than 1.4 million employees. The railways traverse the length and breadth of the country, covering 6,909 stations over a total route length of more than 63,327 kilometers (39,350 mi). IR owns over 200,000 wagons, 50,000 coaches and 8,000 locomotives of rolling stock.

Railways were first introduced to India in 1853. By 1947, the year of India's independence, there were forty-two rail systems. In 1951 the systems were nationalised as one unit, becoming one of the largest networks in the world. IR operates both long distance and suburban rail systems on a multi-gauge network of broad, meter and narrow gauges. It also owns locomotive and coach production facilities.

It is a welcome move by the government department and hopefully the result would be shared in due course of time along with the actions to be implemented after the study has been conducted. With the number of diesel locomotives running across the country, a significant change can be made to the environment by increasing diesel locomotives more energy efficient and environment friendly!
