New Delhi tops the pollution charts released by a World Bank and Asian Development Bank joint study of air pollution for 20 major Asian cities between 2000 and 2003. Mumbai (Bombay) and Kolkata (Calcutta) are not far behind and the mindless expansion in all cities in India, rapid civilization with scant respect to environment would cost a lot to the future generations in India.
Government of India has planned to take corrective action, You may read a White Paper released by GOVERNMENT OF INDIA, MINISTRY OF ENVIRONMENT & FORESTS which invited inputs from various experts apart from a serious study on air pollution levels in the city.
Today the need of the hour is to combat pollution on a national scale, not just limiting it to the Capital city and adopt models to make cities eco-friendly, promoting mass transport systems like Delhi Metro, rebuild non-existent footpath to allow pedestrians to walk without the fear of getting crushed under Blue - Death lines, use cycle as a means of transport which not only helps to keep one fit, doesn't emit any pollution as well.
