A Gift From Development Activities In the present era when demand of material and facilities has grown several manifolds due to increase in population and changing lifestyle, it is not possible to compromise with the developmental activities; however, we can’t even think to allow rise in GHG (Green House Gases) emission for obvious reason. So a balance has to be worked upon and a consensus arrived at among the Population, Developmental activities and Pollution in form of emission / discharge. We have been already experiencing the losses and have fairly good predictions of unintended mega loss if the pollution and population is not controlled at various levels and stages. There are several ways and steps required to be taken by one and all and we shall keep talking about them in various form.
As described by Dr. Pachauri, Chairman IPCC, Global rise in temperature shall create problem of various kinds like - Extreme Temperature Variations
- Floods and Drought
- Irregular Rainfall
- Drying up / behavioral change of rivers,
- Melting of glaciers resulting to sea level rise , Submerging few structures/ towns situated near seashores,
- Difficulty in getting potable water shall increase,
- Food stuff would also start showing downward trend due to less supply than ever increasing demand and so on…
Apart from above, various kind of temperature related disease shall also increase and several species would extinct gradually. Bush Administration Affirms Climate Change Causing Extreme Weather
Just back from a short blogging break, to find the climate crisis never rests. Scientists and policy-makers have finally caught up with ecology as the link between climate change and extreme weather -- such as the recent flooding and tornadoes in the U.S. -- has been reaffirmed. The only surprise is the new report was released and endorsed by the Bush administration, whose climate obstruction over the past decade has bordered upon criminality. To issue such a serious report after a decade of inaction is unconscionable, and can only be forgiven if the administration swings into real climate change policy action now.
We can construed; excessive Green House Gas (GHG) Emission in to atmosphere is one of the major factors for temp rise. It is interesting to note that all the developed countries emit higher quantum of GHG. The emission quantity has become a symbol for prosperity of any nation as it results out of industrialization. The developmental activities are responsible for a spurt in GHG emission. There has been a quantum jump over past two decades.
Certain methods given below are useful to combat the global warming by GHG abatement.
- Clean development mechanism (CDM)
- Carbon-di-oxide sequestration (storage)
- Carbon-di-oxide re-injection to formations
- CO2 consumption for useful purpose
These are few of the emerging methods to contain the GHG emission by reducing its production or eliminating it from the scene/ source.
Further to the acceptance of Human Population growth as one of the important factor behind rise in Global temperatures, we must understand the gravity of problem as well which seems to be much more severe than thought. Following comments by Steven Earl Salmony made regarding awareness campaign on Human Population are equally applicable in respect to environmental aspects. Let us take a moment to identify global challenges that are emerging and converging in our planetary home. Of course, this is a partial list to which other threats to human and environmental health can be added.
- Unregulated human overpopulation of Earth
- Unwelcome human-induced effects of global warming in particular and climate change in general
- Human-driven pollution of Earth's environs
- Reckless dissipation of Earth's resources by the human species, with particular attention to the challenges posed by peak oil and peak soil.
- Relentless expansion of the unbridled global political economy.
These distinctly human activities appear to be overspreading the surface of Earth on such a gigantic scale and at so astounding a growth rate that scientists can make projections indicating a noticeable risk to life as we know it and to the integrity of Earth, perhaps in these early years of Century XXI. That is to say, Earth cannot much longer sustain unrestrained human population growth, unrestricted per human consumption and unchecked economic globalization without running the risk of precipitating some kind of global ecological catastrophe.
