PM Mr Manmohan Singh Asks For Calm in The Face of Drought in India
News - Latest

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday called for calm in the face of drought in the country and said the nation could handle it.

In a special session devoted to the crisis at the chief ministers’ meeting on internal security, Singh said, “There is no need to panic as we have a better understanding of how to handle a crisis like the drought.” Assam, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Manipur, Nagaland, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh have declared drought, partly or wholly.

“We have faced problems like this before and now there is much greater elbow room to deal with this drought. There is adequate stock of wheat and rice in our godowns. And what is more, this time we have in place livelihood programmes like NREGA and Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana,” Singh said.

Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said the NREGA could be extended for drought relief.

Later, at a meeting of an Empowered Group of Ministers set up last week to discuss the drought situation, Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar said the government was considering extending distribution of imported pulses at Rs 10 per kg. The scheme was introduced last year. Due to poor sowing in the Kharif season, the price of pulses has soared.

He urged states to protect existing crops and use powers under the Essential Commodities Act to check hoarding of foodgrains and sugar.
